Today is trash day on my street and so last evening I was carrying the cans out to the road when my neighbor’s elementary-aged son walked over. He asked if he could pick up dog poop from my yard. What? I looked at him for a moment with what must have been a look of shock and then told him that if he wanted to he could. So as we’re walking back to where I keep the pooper-scooper he begins to explain to me that he’s practicing responsibility. He said that he’d really like to have a dog of his own and so he better start practicing whats required to take care of a dog.
That gave me a good laugh, and then today as I’m finishing some last minute preparations for this month in Kids’ Life that conversation popped into my head again. It’s a reminder to me of how appropriate this month’s virtue is. Responsibility: showing you can be trusted with what’s expected of you. I’m looking forward to a great month of our teams partnering together with you to give kids a look at what God thinks about responsibility. Be sure to visit our resources page for ways that you can partner with us in teaching your kids about faith and character.
Now where was my neighbor last night at about 9:00p when my beloved pet found a remaining pile of poo to roll around in and needed an impromptu evening scrubbing. Guess I’ll save the dog bath lesson for another day.
